Gretchen Tholen hit an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie lifting King's College to a 3-2 win over Wilkes University to garner the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Freedom Conference Tournament. King's College will now take on top-seeded Misericordia at 11 a.m. in the first game of the post season event.

The contest started as a pitchers duel as both Lindsey Hoerner of King's and Lindsay Behrenshausen (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs) kept the hitting at bay. Hoerner allowed just one hit over the first three innings, while Behrenshausen allowed just three during that same span.

King's got on the board first with a run in the top of the third when Lauren DeCreny singled through the right side to score Katie Fry, who reached on an error. Two of the Lady Monarchs runs were unearned as Wilkes committed two costly errors that proved to be the difference in the game.

Wilkes' bats came alive in the fourth inning when it strung together a pair of hits, but a fielder's choice by Erin Plank (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) scored Angeline Urban (Mahanoy City, Pa./Mahanoy Area) who pinch ran for Cori Saltzer (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East). Urban's run tied the game at one before King's scored in the top of the fifth after a Wilkes throwing error allowed Abbey Knoblauch to score from second.

The lead wouldn't last long as the Lady Colonels answered in the bottom of the fifth after they picked up three more hits, including an RBI single by Plank to score Kathy Dalton (Neptune, N.J./St. Rose) who singled to center. Plank finished with three of the team's seven hits while Saltzer picked up two.

Neither team would score again in regulation, but the Lady Monarchs threatened in the top of the seventh when Samantha Hornberger and Meaghan Galvin both singled. Behrenshausen got out of the jam when she got DeCreny to fly out to left to end the inning.

Wilkes had its chance in the bottom of the seventh when Dalton reached on a two-out walk and would later steal second, but was left stranded when a foul out to the first base side ended the inning.

The top of the eighth saw King's get a leadoff single from Becky Loring before Hoerner reached on a bunt single to move Loring to second. Both runners would move up a base after Christie Parfitt hit a sacrifice bunt. Tholen's game-winning single to center followed before Hornberger lined into a double play to end the inning.

The Lady Colonels sent just four batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning with pinch hitter Kerry Finnerty (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge) reaching on a walk. A popup to second base ended the game and Wilkes' season as the Lady Colonels finished the season with an 18-21 record.
