The Wilkes University women's volleyball team traveled to King's College Wednesday night to challenge the Monarchs in Freedom Conference action. After four well-played games the Lady Colonels found themselves victors, improving to 11-8 on the season.
In the first game of the match Wilkes took a 9-8 lead and was able to sustain control throughout the contest. The Lady Colonels ended up winning game one 25-20, despite having more errors than the Monarchs. Wilkes was led by
Marissa Harrison (Shavertown/Lake-Lehman) with eight kills and eight digs, while
LeeAnn Searfoss (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) handed out 15 assists.
In game number two Wilkes got down early, but stuck with King's throughout the contest. Wilkes made it interesting near the end, but a service error by the Lady Colonels gave the Monarchs the victory, 25-23. Wilkes had 11 kills and eight errors in the game.
Tensions were high near the end of game three, as Wilkes had fought to grab a lead after being down early. With the score 24-22 in favor of Wilkes,
Emily DeBuck (Pine Island, NY/Warwick Valley) served an ace to seal the victory, and give the Lady Colonels all the momentum heading into the fourth game. Harrison had eight kills in the game, while Searfoss recorded 14 assists.
In game four Wilkes dashed out of the gates to an early 5-1 lead, one they would never surrender. The Lady Colonels would cruise to a 25-16 win, securing the match and defeating their cross-town rivals, 3-1. Harrison had six kills on only eight attempts in the game, while Searfoss had nine assists and
Allison Kelleher (Sayre, Pa./Athens Area) recorded four digs.
On the evening, Harrison recorded a double-double with 26 kills and17 digs, as well as a .339 attack percentage. Kelleher led the team with 20 total digs, while Searfoss collected 47 assists.
Julie Page (New Milford, Pa./Blue Ridge) had eight kills in the contest, while
Kate McGurk (Swarthmore/Ridley) and DeBuck each had seven.
With the win the Lady Colonels are now 11-8 and 2-1 in conference play. They will look to improve upon their season when they host DeSales on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at the Martz Center. That match will begin at 7:00 p.m.
