Tuesday evening the Wilkes University volleyball team traveled to Reading to face Alvernia University, and after three games defeated the Crusaders 25-12, 25-13 and 25-21. The Lady Colonels are now 6-0 on the season which is the best start in school history.

The first game began with an ace serve by Katie McGurk and the Colonels never looked back. They would manage to stretch the lead to as much as 16 points in the game before winning 25-12. Wilkes recorded a .231 kill percentage, led by Marissa Harrison (Shavertown/Lake-Lehman) who was four for seven on her attacks. LeeAnn Searfoss (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) had seven assists in the game, and Allison Kelleher (Sayre, Pa./Athens Area) had five digs.

Wilkes led in the second game by a score of 8-6 before going on a 7 to 1 run, developing and sustaining a commanding lead for the rest of the contest. Wilkes would cruise to a 25-13 victory behind limited errors and 13 kills, led by Emily DeBuck (Pine Island, NY/Warwick Valley) with four. Searfoss recorded nine assists in the game as well.

In the third and final game of the match Alvernia jumped out to an early lead, but the Lady Colonels would rally from a 17-11 deficit, tying the game at 19 with a Megan Parsi (Rhinebeck, NY/Rhinebeck) cross court kill. Wilkes would ultimately win the game, securing the match and a 6-0 record. Parsi and McGurk combined for eight kills in the game, and Searfoss added another eight assists to make her total 24 on the day.

The Lady Colonels had balanced offensive attack, with Harrison recording nine kills, while DeBuck and McGurk had eight. Parsi had all four of her kills at crucial times in the final game. Kelleher led the team defensively, digging 16 Crusader attacks, while Julie Page (New Milford, Pa./Blue Ridge) and Harrison each had 11. Wilkes held Alvernia to a kill percentage under .50.

The Colonels will look to expand upon their undefeated record when they participate in the Scranton Tournament on Sept. 11 and 12. Their first match will be against SUNY-IT at 6 p.m. Friday.
