The Wilkes University men's tennis team opened its 2010 home season in fine fashion, taking a 9-0 win over Neumann. Three Colonel players won their matches without losing a set, while two of the other three did not lose more than two sets in either match.
Wes McCollum (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin),
Evan Katz (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) and
Clarke Freeman (York, PA/Central York) all won their matches 6-0, 6-0 leading the Colonels to their third win of the season.
Wilkes jumped out to a 3-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. The freshman duo of
Cesar Leon (Woodhaven, NY/Brooklyn Tech) and Freeman put the Colonels on the board first with an 8-5 win at the No. 2 position before McCollum and Katz made it 2-0 with their 8-2 win over Greg Christansen and Abe Joseph at the No. 3 spot.
Jeremy Nolt (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) and
Chris Cozzillio (Harrisburg/Trinity) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory over Chris Brown and Dan Harnos at the top spot.
In singles action, Katz took the first victory, a straight-set sweep win over Christansen before McCollum clinched the match with his 6-0, 6-0 win over Brian Crispin at the No. 3 spot.
Freeman made it 6-0 after his 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Joseph at the No. 6 spot, while Cozzillio continued the winning ways with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Dan Harnos at the No. 4 spot. Nolt took a 6-1, 6-0 straight-set win over Bridgeman before Leon won the final singles match, a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3) victory over Brown at the top spot.
The Colonels will be back in action tomorrow when they host Elizabethtown at noon on the Ralston Courts.
