Game One
Game Two
The Wilkes University softball team had just eight hits the entire day against DeSales, but had chances to win each game in the double-header, ultimately falling 1-0 and 4-3 in its first Freedom Conference games.
In the first game it was a battle of pitching, as Lady Colonel Lindsey Behrenshausen and DeSales' Katie Morrissey had six scoreless innings a piece going into the final frame. The Bulldogs had loaded the bases in the second, but Wilkes got out of the jam, getting two outs and keeping the game scoreless.
In the bottom of the seventh, DeSales had a runner on third, and a ball was struck to Wilkes shortstop
Gina Stefanelli (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers), who couldn't get the runner at home in time, scoring the game-winning run with two outs.
The only Lady Colonels with hits in the game were Stefanelli,
Jackie Follweiler (Slatington/Northern Lehigh) and
Abbey Agresti (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East). Behrenshausen allowed only six hits and walked just one batter, but in the end wound up with the loss.
In the second game, DeSales scored two runs in the third and fourth innings, and had a comfortable 4-0 lead over halfway through the contest. But in the sixth inning Wilkes was able to get most of those runs back when Follweiler hit a three-run homerun to center field, bring the deficit to one.
In the seventh,
Amanda Holston (Frankford, DE/Sussex Central) hit a double and
Megan Mowery (Berwick/Berwick) singles, putting runners on the corners with two outs. Unfortunately, Wilkes couldn't manufacture that final run to send the game into extra innings, falling 4-3.
Stefanelli had two hits in the game, while Follweiler had all three RBI's on her home run in the sixth.
Megan Gershey (Lake Ariel, Pa./Western Wayne) picked up the loss for the Lady Colonels, who fell to 1-7 with the defeat.
Wilkes will have an opportunity to bounce back when they play Lycoming on Sunday, March 21. That double-header will begin in Williamsport, Pa. at 1:00 p.m.
