Game One
Game Two
The Wilkes University softball team challenged Lycoming College on Sunday, and after two afternoon games, split against the Warriors, winning the first game 6-4 and dropping the second 10-3.
In game one, the Lady Colonels jumped out to an early lead, as
Gina Stefanelli (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers) singled to knock in
Megan Mowery (Berwick/Berwick). Then
Alyssa Ciesla (Branchville, N.J./High Point) singled later in the inning, hitting in Kate Ordile from second and giving the Lady Colonels an early 2-0 lead.
In the second inning Wilkes only improved upon its lead, as Stefanelli knocked in two more runs, extending the lead to four. The Warriors answered in the bottom of the inning though, scoring three runs on four hits and taking advantage of a Lady Colonel error.
Neither team scored until the fifth, when Wilkes manufactured a run on three hits, and a
Laura Gonzales (Mount Bethel, Pa./Bangor Area) doubled, scoring Ciesla from third. The Lady Colonels tacked on another run in the sixth, giving them a two run advantage. Lycoming was able to score one more run in the sixth, but couldn't mount an appropriate comeback, as Wilkes cruised to a 6-4 victory.
Lindsey Behrenshausen got the win for Wilkes, surrendering four earned runs on eight hits. Stefanelli led the Lady Colonels offensively with three hits and three RBI's, while Ciesla also had three hits and two RBI's.
It was a different story in the second game though, as in the bottom of the first inning the Warriors scored two quick runs on three hits and a Wilkes error. The Lady Colonels answered in the fourth, as
Cori Saltzer (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East) hit a three-run homerun, giving Wilkes a quick one run lead. Lycoming tied up the game in the next inning, and the rest of the game belonged to the Warriors.
The big inning for Lycoming was the sixth, when they put together a string of seven hits, scoring six more runs and making the game virtually out of reach for the Lady Colonels. The Warriors then cruised to a 10-3 victory.
Offensively, the Lady Colonels were led by Saltzer with three RBI's on one hit, while
Jackie Follweiler (Slatington/Northern Lehigh) and
Suzanne Ekstrom (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic) each had two hits a piece.
Megan Gershey (Lake Ariel, Pa./Western Wayne) picked up the loss for Wilkes, giving up 21 hits on the day.
With the split, Wilkes is now 2-8 on the season, and will look to turn things around when it hosts Scranton on Wednesday, March 24. The first game will begin at 4:00 p.m.
