Game One
Game Two

The Wilkes University softball team hosted William Paterson in a double-header on Sunday in non-conference action. Both games saw excellent pitching by the Pioneers, who took both games, 4-0 and 12-4.

The first game was all about pitching for the Pioneers, as the Lady Colonels were only able to collect three hits in the entire game. Meanwhile, William Paterson struck early, scoring two runs in the first inning on two doubles and an error by Wilkes.

The other two runs for the Pioneers were solo home runs in both the third and seventh inning. On the mound for the Lady Colonels was Lindsay Behrenshausen (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs), who got the loss on the day but also struck out a career-high 13 batters. In the bottom of the seventh Wilkes had two runners on base, but was unable to drive anyone home, falling in the first of two games, 4-0.

Jackie Follweiler (Slatington/Northern Lehigh), Cori Saltzer (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East) and Alyssa Ciesla (Branchville, N.J./High Point) each collected hits in the game.

Megan Gershey (Lake Ariel, Pa./Western Wayne) was in the circle for the second game, fresh off of a win on Saturday against FDU-Florham. The first batter for the Pioneers reached on an error, and advanced to second on a passed ball, putting a runner in scoring position with no outs early for William Paterson. That run would eventually score on a single to left, giving William Patterson an early 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the frame Wilkes collected two hits with one out, putting two runners on base in the form of Kristy Ordile (Bellmawr, N.J./Triton Regional) and Gina Stefanelli (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers). Follweiler then doubled to left center, tying up the score 1-1. Wilkes had runners on second and third with one out, but couldn't drive any more, as the inning ended in a tie.

The Pioneers started the second inning with a double down the left field line, putting yet another leadoff hitter in scoring position. That runner crossed home after a single to right, and another double put runners on second and third with no one out. A wild pitch scored one run, then a single to right and a Wilkes error scored two more, making the score 5-1. William Paterson then loaded the bases, and the Pioneers pushed the lead to eight before the top of the inning finally ended.

After the big second inning, neither team was able to score till the bottom of the fourth, when a double by Laura Gonzales (Mount Bethel, Pa./Bangor Area) scored two runners for the Lady Colonels, making the score 9-3 after four innings played. The Pioneers answered in the fifth, scoring three runs on three hits, pushing the lead to nine.

Wilkes had to answer in the bottom of the frame, but couldn't put together enough offense to bring the deficit to below eight, falling 12-4.

Gershey got the loss for Wilkes, while Gonzales did most of the work offensively with her double and 2 RBI's.

The Lady Colonels will regroup and head to Dallas, Pa. on Thursday to take on Misericordia. That double-header will begin at 3:00 p.m.
