The Wilkes University softball team dropped a pair of heartbreakers to Misericordia as the Lady Cougars took 3-2 and 2-1 victories over the Lady Colonels for the two-game Freedom Conference sweep.

In the first game, the Lady Colonel bats were done in by pitcher Katherine Lucenti, as she allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out eight. The second game, however, Wilkes was about to pound out nine hits, including a double by Gina Stefanelli (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers), who was 4-for-6 on the day and two runs batted in.

Misericordia struck first in the opening game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, picking up five of its nine hits on the game. The Lady Colonels answered in the top of the third after picking up a pair of hits and capitalizing on a Lady Cougar error. Abbey Agresti (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East) led off the frame with a single while Amanda Holston (Frankford, DE/Sussex Central) reached on a fielder's choice. A Misericordia error allowed Agresti to reach safely at first where Wilkes had runners on first and second. A Christy Ordile walk loaded the bases before Stefanelli's double drove in Agresti and Holston. Unfortunately for Wilkes, it would only get one more hit the rest of the way.

In the second game, Wilkes picked up two hits in the first inning, but was unable to plate any runners. In the top of the fourth, Holston hit a two-out RBI single to score Megan Gershey (Lake Ariel, Pa./Western Wayne), who reached on a single as well. Despite tallying nine hits on the day, the Lady Colonels were not able to score again the rest of the way.

Misericordia answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at one on a Nicole Wenner RBI single. In the bottom of the seventh, Jennifer Cory struck out to lead off the inning, but a passed ball allowed her to reach first. A Lady Colonel error off the bat of Courtney Novajosky allowed Cory to advance to second before Hollie Sarnak reached on a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. A wild pitch to the next batter allowed Cory to score the game-winner.

The Lady Colonels fell to 5-13 overall and 2-4 in Freedom Conference play. They will be back in action Wednesday when they host Baptist Bible in a double header starting at 6 p.m.
