The Wilkes University men's tennis team avenged its only regular season Freedom Conference loss of the year last year by upending Manhattanville 5-4 on its home courts. The Colonels won two of three doubles matches and the first three singles matches to go up 5-1 before the Valiants won the final three contests of the day.
In double play, Manhattanville took a win at No. 1 doubles before
Clarke Freeman (York, PA/Central York) and
Cesar Leon (Woodhaven, NY/Brooklyn Tech) tied the match one with an 8-5 win over Dean Tahir and Lance Dorfi at the No. 2 spot.
At No. 3 doubles,
Wes McCollum (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) and Katz gave the Colonels a 2-1 lead with an 8-6 win over Andres Rivera and Karim Mahmoud.
In singles action, McCullum gave the Colonels a commanding 3-1 lead with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Tahir at the No. 4 position before
Jeremy Nolt (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) made it 4-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Dorfi at the No. 3 spot.
Evan Katz (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) clinched the match at the No. 5 spot after taking a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Rivera.
Manhattanville kept the match close by winning the next three singles matches at the No. 1, 2 and six spots. The victory over the Valiants moved the Colonels to 3-0 in Freedom Conference play and 8-2 overall. They will be back in action Wednesday when they take on King's at 3:30 p.m.
