The Wilkes University men's tennis team clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Freedom Conference Team Championships with a 9-0 win over Eastern.
The Colonels were in control the entire match, taking all three doubles matches to take a quick 3-0 advantage. At the No. 3 position,
Evan Katz (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) and
Wes McCollum (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) took an 8-1 win before
Clarke Freeman (York, PA/Central York) and
Cesar Leon (Woodhaven, NY/Brooklyn Tech) won their match 8-2 at the No. 2 spot. The tandem of
Chris Cozzillio (Harrisburg/Trinity) and
Jeremy Nolt (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 victory.
In singles play, Leon took the first set 6-4 before his opponent, Jordan Gates retired, giving Wilkes a 4-0 lead. McCollum, playing at the No. 4 position, clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Tyler Hoagland.
Freeman continued the winning ways for the Colonels with his 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 6 spot, while Cozzillio downed Bryan Arnett 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. Katz and Nolt both won their matches in straight-sets to complete the sweep for the Colonels.
The Colonels will not have much time to rest as they head to Madison, N.J. to take on FDU-Florham for their final regular season match of the year.
