Game One
Game Two
The Wilkes University softball team hosted Eastern in a double-header on Saturday, as the Lady Colonels were fighting to keep their postseason hopes alive. Wilkes dropped the first game to Eastern, 5-2, but picked up the win in game two with help from a late home run, 3-2.
In the first game the Eagles owned the beginning innings, scoring three runs in the top of the first to take a commanding lead. In the fourth they added two more runs, while the Lady Colonels struggled at the plate.
In the bottom of the seventh Wilkes put together a string of hits, as a leadoff double by
Megan Gershey (Lake Ariel, Pa./Western Wayne) was scored on a double by
Alyssa Ciesla (Branchville, N.J./High Point). Soon after,
Megan Mowery (Berwick/Berwick) singled to left, scoring Ciesla from third and making the score 5-2 with one out. The next two batters couldn't get the job done though, as the Lady Colonels fell in game one, 5-2.
Ciesla and Mowery had the lone RBI's for the Lady Colonels in the contest.
In game two
Maureen Pelot (Kirkville, N.Y./Chittenango) got the start for Wilkes, and Eastern once again wasted no time to score, manufacturing an early run in the first for a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the frame Mowery started things off with a single to left, while
Abbey Agresti (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East) followed it up with a single of her own, putting Wilkes in prime scoring position. Wilkes was unable to drive those runs home though, leaving the score at 1-0 after one.
In the third inning a costly Eastern error allowed for
Gina Stefanelli (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Meyers) to drive in two runs with a double down the left field line, giving the Lady Colonels their first lead of the day, 2-1. Meanwhile, Pelot kept dealing for Wilkes in the circle, keeping the Eagles at bay through the middle innings.
In the sixth inning Eastern tied up the contest when a run scored on a wild pitch, and in the bottom of the inning
Rachel Miller (Wyoming, Pa./Holy Redeemer) hit a solo home run to give Wilkes the lead once again, 3-2. In the top of the seventh, the Eagles advanced a runner to second base, but Pelot took care of the final two outs, giving Wilkes the victory 3-2.
The Lady Colonels were led by Miller with the game-winning home run, while Stefanelli had the other two RBI's with her double in the third inning. Pelot picked up the win for Wilkes, striking out seven batters.
The Lady Colonels will now host Alvernia on Tuesday, April 27 in their last home game of the season. That double-header will begin at 3:30 p.m.
