The Wilkes University softball team used big innings in both games to sweep Baptist Bible, winning the first game 11-0 before taking a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.
The Lady Colonels scored seven runs in the second inning of the first game, thanks to five hits while taking advantage of three Defender errors.
Megan Gershey (Lake Ariel, Pa./Western Wayne) hit a one-out single to score
Alyssa Ciesla (Branchville, N.J./High Point) and
Rachel Miller (Wyoming, Pa./Holy Redeemer).
Jackie Follweiler (Slatington/Northern Lehigh) would hit one of her two doubles on the game with two outs, scoring
Abbey Agresti (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East), who reached on an error by the shortstop. Follweiler scored the final run of the inning on a Baptist Bible error, giving Wilkes a commanding lead.
Wilkes would strike again in the bottom of the fifth when Follweiler doubled to start the inning before Miller walked and
Cori Saltzer (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East) singled to load the bases. Ciesla ended the game on a walk-off grand slam, her first round-tripper of the season.
In the second game, the Lady Colonels struck with a lone run in the second before pouring on four more in the third inning, giving them a 5-0 advantage. Wilkes would eventually make it 6-0 with a run in the sixth thanks to a Follweiler single up the middle.
Baptist Bible broke up the shutout in the top of the seventh with an infield RBI single, but was unable cut into the lead.
The Lady Colonels improved to 7-13 on the year and will be back in action on Saturday when they head to Purchase, N.Y. to take on Manhattanville for a double header.
