WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's soccer team hosted Marywood on Wednesday, playing its first game at the newly renovated Ralston Athletic Complex. All the Lady Colonels needed in their first game of the season was one score, as Wilkes shutout the Pacers by a score of 1-0.
The first half was a defensive display from both squads, as Wilkes was only able to rattle off two shots in the period, both of which were on goal. On the other side of the field, solid defensive play held the Pacers off, as Marywood recorded only one shot.
Although the story of the game was the two defenses, the lone goal of the match was scored by senior
Taryn Hallowell (Belvidere, NJ, Belvidere) on a penalty kick less than two minutes into the second period. Hallowell snuck the shot past the Pacer keeper on the right side, lifting Wilkes to a 1-0 lead.
Marywood pressed near the end of the game, but was unable to tie the contest and send it into overtime. Hallowell led Wilkes in the contest, putting two shots on goal and scoring the lone goal on the night.
Krista Zawistowski (Syosset, NY, Syosset),
Jenna Sargent (Stroudsburg, Pocono Mountain East) and
Lyndsay Ellis (Shavertown, Dallas) each had shots on goal in the game.
Goalie
Samantha Rohn (Levittown, Neshaminy) collected her first shutout of the year, saving three shots while working the entire game.
Wilkes will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 4 when they head to Pomona, N.J. to take on Stockton College. That game begins at 3:00 p.m.
