WILKES-BARRE - The Wilkes University volleyball team participated in its first match of the season on Wednesday, hosting Scranton at the Marts Center. After four games played, Wilkes found itself on the short end of the stick, falling 3-1.
Wilkes fell in the first game 27-25 despite an early lead.
Marissa Harrison (Shavertown, Lake-Lehman) had four kills in the game, while
Kate McGurk (Swarthmore, Ridley) and
Emily DeBuck (Pine Island, NY, Warwick Valley) each had two. In game number two, the Royals sustained their momentum, keeping a three to five point lead on the Lady Colonels throughout the contest. Wilkes ultimately fell by a score of 25-21.
In game three Wilkes jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead behind solid net play by DeBuck, forcing an early Royal timeout. The Lady Colonels continued their attack, extending their lead to six before Scranton broke the streak. Throughout the rest of the contest, the Royal surged to break back into the game, but Wilkes held them at bay through service aces and solid net play. At one point Wilkes was up by eight points before taking the game, 25-19. Despite tallying only eight kills in the game, Wilkes took advantage of many Scranton errors to capture their first game of the year.
In game four it was a different story for the Lady Colonels, as Scranton jumped out to an early 6-1 lead. Wilkes fought back over the next ten minutes, and after an ace serve by
Casey Bohan (Harding, Wyoming Area), had worked their way to just a three point deficit. After a timeout the Royals came out firing, forcing a Wilkes timeout with the score 20-14. Scranton then rolled to a 25-18 victory, sealing the match.
Wilkes was led by Harrison who had 16 kills and 17 digs on the night, while
Alex Zero (Moscow, North Pocono) passed out 20 assists. McGurk chipped in 16 digs and 10 assists as well.
The Lady Colonels will be back in action this Friday when they head to Bethlehem, Pa. to participate in the Moravian Tournament. They play Friday, Sept. 3 at 4:00 p.m. as well as Saturday, Sept. 4 at 10:00 a.m.
