THREE SECOND HALF GOALS LIFT #2 EASTERN OVER #3 WILKES WOMEN'S SOCCER 3-1 IN FREEDOM SEMI-FINALS

ST. DAVIDS, PA – Despite holding a 1-0 halftime lead, the #3 Wilkes University women's soccer team could not hold on as host #2 Eastern University scored three unanswered goals in the second half to post a 3-1 win in the semi-finals of the Freedom Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon from Olson Field.

Wilkes sees its season end at 8-6-3 overall. Eastern improves to 12-5-2 overall and will meet the winner of #4 FDU-Florham and top seeded Misericordia University Saturday at the highest remaining seed.

Wilkes took a 1-0 lead in the first frame when Lyndsay Ellis (Shavertown/Dallas) played a ball to Katy Fissel (Madison, NJ/Madison) who blasted a shot that was deflected off the Eagles keeper and into the back of the net at 21:52. The Lady Colonels would take the 1-0 lead into the break holding the explosive Eastern offense at bay throughout the half.

The Eagles wasted little time tying the game at 1-1 to start the second half as Kelsey Doutrich dribbled to the left end line where she sent a shot that found the net to the back post side at 46:47. Eastern took their first lead of the contest at 60:51 when Ashley Graybill scored unassisted off a direct kick from the 18 yard line. 10 minutes later Bethany Engle added a penaly kick goal to seal the home playoff victory for the Eagles.

Eastern held a 14-4 shot advantage throughout while garnering six corner kicks. Wilkes was held without a corner attempt in the match for just the second time all season. Sam Lindo (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) finished with five saves on 13 shots faced in net for Wilkes, while Eagles goalie Alysia Goodman made two stops on four shots faced.

Wilkes will return the bulk of their lineup in 2012 looking for a repeat trip to the conference tournament.
