Averett Box Score / Christopher Newport Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Wilkes University softball team dropped both of its games today as the Lady Colonels opened their 2011 season by losing to Averett 7-4 and No. 14 Christopher Newport 4-0 at the Virginia Wesleyan College Beach Blast in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

In game one, freshman Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) picked up the loss, giving six hits and a walk in four innings of work. Striking out one, she gave up six runs, all unearned, while going 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.

Cori Saltzer (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East) drove in two runs in the fifth with a double and Megan Mowery (Berwick/Berwick) finished 2-for-4 with a run scored in the loss. 

Senior Lindsay Behrenshausen (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs) went the entire way in the nightcap, fanning three but giving up eight hits and four runs, three of them unearned. Christopher Newport got three of its runs in the fifth inning with a two-out homerun.

The Lady Colonels managed just two hits off of the 14th-ranked Captains, getting one each from Jackie Follweiler (Slatington/Northern Lehigh) and Kait Brown (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor).

Wilkes will have a chance to redeem itself tomorrow, opening the day with Hood at 10:00 a.m. followed by North Carolina Wesleyan at noon.
