LADY COLONELS SPLIT AGAINST MISERICORDIA

Game One Box \ Game Two Box

WILKES-BARRE – Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) pitched a shutout in game two and Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) had a two-run homerun to help the Lady Colonels take one of two games from Misericordia on Thursday, dropping the first contest 2-0 in nine innings, while winning the second contest 3-0.

Game one can best be described as a pitching duel, as Lindsey Behrenshausen got the start for the Lady Colonels, and Caitlin Cromley got the nod for the Cougars. Each pitcher cruised through the early innings, but in the fifth inning Wilkes had a chance to score with runners on first and third, but couldn't come through.

In the top of the ninth inning, Misericorda had a runner on when Hollie Sarnak hit a two-run homerun, which eventually ended up being the difference in the contest. Wilkes had only three hits in the nine innings of play, but had chances to get runners across home plate. Meanwhile, Behrenshausen only gave up four hits in the contest, the biggest being the game-winning homerun in the ninth. She also had one of the three hits for the Lady Colonels offensively.

In game number two it was all Wilkes, as Bixler managed the game wonderfully on the mound through all seven innings. Meanwhile, the Lady Colonel offense manufactured its first run of the day on a Borger two-run homerun in the fourth, giving Wilkes a 2-0 lead.

That turned out to be enough offense for Bixler, who cruised through the fifth and sixth innings, while Jackie Follweiler (Slatington/Northern Lehigh) singled in another run for Wilkes in the bottom of the sixth. In the seventh Misericordia got a runner on via a single, but the final batter of the day grounded out, giving Wilkes the 3-0 victory.

Bixler finished with seven innings pitched while surrendering five hits and two walks, striking out two batters and giving up no runs. Borger had the big hit for the Lady Colonels, while Bixler also went 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs scored. Along with having a spectacular day defensively, Megan Mowery (Berwick/Berwick) was 2-for-2 with a double in the second game.

With the split Wilkes goes to 4-20 on the season, and 3-9 in Freedom Conference play.

The Lady Colonels will be back in action when they head to Annville, Pa. to take on Lebanon Valley next Tuesday, April 26. That game will begin at 3:00 p.m.
