WILKES-BARRE –
Alex Makos (Mansfield, PA/Mansfield)' deciding victory at sixth singles finished the match early as Wilkes University blanked King's College 5-0 in the semifinals of the 2011 Freedom Conference Men's Tennis Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex courts.
The top-seeded Colonels (10-3) will now host No. 2 seed Manhattanville College, who defeated Eastern University 6-0 at home on Tuesday.
Wilkes started off the match with a pair of easy doubles wins, as
Evan Katz (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) and
Wes McCollum (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) defeated Tony Bevivino and his partner Michael Steinberger 8-1 at No. 1 and
Clarke Freeman (York, PA/Central York) and Makos beat P.T. Romano and Chris DiMino 8-1 at No. 3.
Jeremy Nolt (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) and
Dakkota Deem (Montgomery, PA/Montgomery) then put the Colonels in front 3-0 with an 8-6 win over Tim Carroll and Jake Rohring at second doubles.
McCollum got the Colonels fourth win of the day, an easy 6-0, 6-0 victory over Steinberger at third singles before Makos got the decider, a 6-0, 6-2 win over Romano at No. 6.
Wilkes won the season's earlier match with the Valiants 8-1 at home, but several of the singles victories came in three sets or where very close.
The Colonels will host Manhattanville in the finals this Saturday at the Ralston Athletic Complex, with action currently set to get underway at 1:00 p.m.
