ANNVILLE – The Lady Colonels managed just one hit in game one but fought back to hold a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning of game two before ultimately falling as Wilkes University lost both games of a doubleheader to 23rd-ranked Lebanon Valley College 8-0 and 9-3 on Tuesday afternoon in Annville.
In the opener, the Dutchmen (25-6) jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings, carrying a no-hitter into the fourth.
Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) broke that up with a single, but Wilkes couldn't do anything with it, eventually losing in five innings.
Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) took the loss, giving up 10 hits and seven earned over four innings in the circle for the Lady Colonels.
Game two took a different turn, as the Lady Colonels calmed down after giving up an opening inning run to Lebanon Valley, as starter
Heather Compton (Easton, PA/Easton) allowed just two hits over the next two innings of work.
Wilkes would tie it up at 1-1 in the third when Bixler led off the inning with a triple, before scoring on a sacrifice fly to left by Borger.
The Dutchmen threatened to take the lead in the fourth, getting a leadoff single and stolen base. The next batter then singled to center, but the runner was thrown out by Bixler at home after trying to score from second.
Lebanon Valley was able to get two more base runners, but Compton worked herself out of the inning with a pair of ground outs.
The Lady Colonels took the lead in the fifth, as Bixler again got things started with a one-out double. Borger then followed her with a double of her own, bringing home Bixler as Wilkes took the 2-1 lead.
Two batters later,
Cori Saltzer (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East) went for the third double of the inning, bringing around Borger, and the Lady Colonels took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
It's there that Lebanon Valley took control, manufacturing two runs to tie the score before getting six more in the sixth, highlighted by a grand slam, to take the 9-3 lead.
Bixler, Borger and Saltzer each finished with two hits apiece for the Lady Colonels while Compton took the loss, giving up 11 hits and five earned over her six innings in the circle.
The Lady Colonels (4-22) will travel north to face the University of Scranton tomorrow night in a 6:00 p.m. doubleheader at Jessup Fields. They'll then host Manhattanville College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. as they celebrate senior day.
