Game One Box / Game Two Box

WILKES-BARRE – The Lady Colonels received a pair of quality starts from Lindsay Behrenshausen (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs) and Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) but the offense was unable to piece together enough hits as Wilkes University was swept by DeSales University in a Freedom Conference softball doubleheader, losing 4-0 and 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex.

Behrenshausen and Bixler combined to scatter 13 hits in the 14 total innings, giving up six earned and striking out eight.

The Bulldogs picked up their first run of game one when Kate Steiner crossed the plate on Kristin Schultz's double in the third inning.

Behrenshausen was able to rebound, allowing just one runner to reach base over the next three innings and struck out two batters as the Lady Colonels kept the score at 1-0.

DeSales was able to get it going in the seventh, however, as Cassie Wagman hit a leadoff homerun and the Bulldogs collected three more hits and two more runs to take the four-run lead, easily getting through the bottom half for the win.

Cindy Diemer (Berwick/Berwick Area) had a season-high three hits, the only Wilkes player to have more than one hit. Behrenshausen notched her ninth complete game of the season, striking out three.

The Bulldogs (11-7, 4-2) got on the scoreboard first in game two, as a throwing error helped bring Steiner around from second as DeSales quickly went up 1-0.

Wilkes got that run back in the bottom half, as Kait Brown (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) and Bixler led off the inning with back-to-back walks. After Brown was out on a force at third, Cori Saltzer (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East)'s single brought Bixler around to knot the score at one-apiece.

Wagman was able to get to the Lady Colonels again in the second, blasting her second homer of the game over the fence in left center as the Bulldogs jumped back on top by one.

Both pitchers then settled down, as Bixler gave up just two hits over the final five innings, striking out four to keep the Bulldogs scoreless. However, the Lady Colonels were only able to collect two hits after the first inning as DeSales starter Katie Morrissey picked up the win.

Bixler's complete game included five strikeouts, as she gave up five hits and walked one. The Lady Colonels three hits came from Saltzer, Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) and Abbey Agresti (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East).

The Lady Colonels return to the field on Thursday when they host Susquehanna University at the Ralston Athletic Complex. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
