COLONELS SEASON ENDS IN THE FIRST ROUND OF NCAA REGIONALS

GAMBIER, OH – Wilkes University's season has unfortunately ended as the Colonels fell to Ohio Northern University 5-0 in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships on Friday at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.

Ohio Northern got off to a great start in doubles action, as the pairing of Michael Kathary and Do Thai defeated the Colonels Jeremy Nolt (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) and Dakkota Deem (Montgomery, PA/Montgomery) 8-4 at No. 2. Evan Katz (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) and Wes McCollum (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) then fell at first doubles 8-2 to Joey Frank and Nick Kowalczyk before Clarke Freeman (York, PA/Central York) and Alex Makos (Mansfield, PA/Mansfield) lost to Andrew Korba and Jeff Carter 8-5.

Kathary then got the best of Katz at second singles, winning 6-1, 6-1 while Kowalczyk closed out the Polar Bears victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Deem.

The Colonels finish their season with an 11-4 record, as they won the Freedom Conference title and advanced to the NCAA championships for the fourth consecutive season.

McCollum and Makos tied for the team-lead in singles victories with 16-apiece, while Freeman, Brandon Helfrich (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia), Deem and Katz also notched double-digit victories.

The Freeman and Makos pairing registered a team-high 10 wins in doubles play this year, while Freeman and McCollum had nine and Katz and McCollum had eight.

The Colonels went a perfect 5-0 against Freedom Conference opponents, before defeating rivals King's College (5-0) and Manhattanville College (5-1) in the tournament to win their fourth title.

Four Colonels earned all-conference honors, with Nolt and Katz being named to the first team and McCollum and Freeman making the second team.
