WILKES WOMEN'S SOCCER POSTS 2-1 WIN OVER LEBANON VALLEY IN HOME DEBUT

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University women's soccer team used a pair of goals and timely goalkeeping to post a 2-1 non-league win over Lebanon Valley College in their home debut Thursday afternoon at a chilly and wet Ralston Athletic Complex.

With the win Wilkes moves to 2-1 overall, while Lebanon Valley drops to 3-2 on the year.

Molly Martin (Centerport, NY/St. Anthony) gave Wilkes a 1-0 lead just 2:18 into the contest when she lobbed a shot over Lebanon Valley keeper Sami Young. The teams battled evenly for the remainder of the half as the Lady Colonels kept their slight advantage at the break.

Lebanon Valley had their chance to tie when Stevi Laird was awarded a penalty kick with 25:14 left in the second half, but the shot sailed over the cross bar to keep the Lady Colonels ahead. Wilkes extended their lead to 2-0 later in the frame when Katy Fissel (Madison, NJ/Madison) found a wide open Ashley Graham (New Hampton, NY/Minisink Valley) on a cross. Graham put it past the keeper inside the right post. Lebanon Valley cut the deficit in half with a late goal, but the Wilkes' defense stiffened to seal the non-conference victory.

Lebanon Valley held a 22-11 shot advantage, while garnering six corner kicks to Wilkes' one attempt. Wilkes goalie Sam Lindo (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) was solid in net finishing with 13 saves. Young made five stops in the loss.

Wilkes returns to the field Saturday when the Lady Colonels welcome Widener University to the Ralston Athletic Complex for a non-league match scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
