FISSEL'S LATE GOAL LEADS WILKES WOMEN'S SOCCER OVER WIDENER, 1-0

EDWARDSVILLE – Katy Fissel (Madison, NJ/Madison) scored the game-winning goal with just 10 minutes left in the second half to propel Wilkes University to a 1-0 shutout win over Widener University in non-conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex.

With the win Wilkes improves to 3-1 on the year, while Widener slides to 2-3-1 on the season.

The teams battled through a scoreless 80:12 before Fissel came true on the game-winner. Alicia Roberts (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland) gave a through ball down the left side where Fissel beat the Pride defense and found the back of the net, beating Widener goalie Vanessa Hejnas inside the right post. It would be all the Lady Colonels needed to seal the 1-0 shutout victory.

Wilkes held a 22-11 shot advantage, while each team garnered three corner kicks. Wilkes keeper Sam Lindo (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) recorded the shutout finishing with three saves in net. Hejnas made eight stops for Widener.

Wilkes will continue their home stretch Wednesday night when they welcome Baptist Bible College for a non-league matchup on the turf at the Ralston Athletic Complex at 7:00 p.m.
