LATE MISERICORDIA GOAL PUSHES COUGARS OVER WILKES WOMEN'S SOCCER 2-1

EDWARDSVILLE – A late Misericordia goal broke open a 1-1 tie late in the second half as the visiting Cougars escaped with a 2-1 win over Wilkes University Tuesday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex in a pivotal Freedom Conference matchup with playoff seeding on the line.

The Cougars entered the game ranked second in the region while Wilkes garnered the tenth spot in the lasts polls released today. With the win, Misericordia improves to 12-2-1 and 5-0 in Freedom play while Wilkes falls to 9-4-2 and 3-1-1 in Freedom play.

Aside from a 1-0 score at the half, the majority of the first period was even. Misericordia led in shots seven to four. Freedom Conference leading goal scorer and point snatcher Sam Helmstetter headed a ball in the upper left post off a boot from Nicolette Ruffler at the 12:31 mark to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, Wilkes evened the score when they made a push into the box and a Cougar handball set the Lady Colonels up with a penalty kick. Katy Fissel (Madison, NJ/Madison) laced the ball into the right corner of the net to make her 3-for-3 in penalty kick opportunities this season.

In the 85th minute, Helmstetter struck again, this time on a dish from battery-mate Laura Roney to steal the victory for Misericordia.

Kate Mahoney (Kingston, NH/Central Catholic) had six stops in net for the Lady Colonels while Maureen Ciccosanti had three saves for the Cougars.

Wilkes continues its Freedom slate Saturday hosting Manhattanville College at the Ralston Athletic Complex at 1:00 p.m. The Lady Colonels will honor its six senior members prior to the start of the contest.
