Steve Finkernagel Alysha Bixler pitched five innings in game one at Alvernia WILKES SOFTBALL EDGED AT ALVERNIA IN NON-CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER 3/21/2012 7:37:00 PM Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WILKES SOFTBALL EDGED AT ALVERNIA IN NON-CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER READING, PA – Host Alvernia University overcame a 7-2 deficit in game one and cruised to a victory in game two over Wilkes University Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader. Alvernia posted a 9-8 comeback victory in game one before capturing a 10-2 win in the nightcap. Following the sweep, Wilkes moves to 4-6 overall while Alvernia improves to 12-2 on the year. Wilkes jumped out to a 7-2 lead after two innings in game one. Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) started the first with a single and advanced to second when Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) drew a one-out walk. Jessalyn Paveletz (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) then singled and Bixler scored on an error by the Crusaders' catcher. Mandy Seccia (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) followed with an RBI single scoring Borger. Paveletz capped off the Lady Colonels scoring in the frame crossing the plate on a throwing error later in the inning. Wilkes added to its lead in the second as Borger and Seccia added RBI hits for the Lady Colonels. From there, Alvernia began its comeback scoring three in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to take the lead at 8-7 heading into the seventh. Wilkes tied the game at 8-8 when Paveletz connected on her second home run of the year sending the contest into extra innings. Alvernia used an RBI single to right field to plate the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Paveletz led the way at the plate going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Seccia followed with one hit and two RBI's. Laykin Hughes (Minersville, PA/Pottsville) recorded the loss in the circle entering in relief of Bixler who threw five innings allowing six runs on 10 hits. In game two, Wilkes got off to another quick start scoring its only two runs of the game in the first. Bixler singled and later scored on an RBI single from Seccia. Alvernia then used a four-hit, four-run frame in the second to take a 5-2 lead into the fourth. The Crusaders scored two runs in the fourth and fifth and added a run in the sixth ending the game with one runner on base and one out. Bixler led the offense in game two with two hits. Heather Compton (Easton, PA/Easton) suffered the loss in the circle going five innings allowing 12 hits throughout. Wilkes returns to Freedom play Saturday when the Lady Colonels host FDU-Florham at 1:00 p.m. at the Ralston Athletic Complex. Print Friendly Version
