WILKES MEN'S TENNIS EDGES ELIZABETHTOWN 5-4 IN REGIONAL MATCHUP

EDWARDSVILLE – With the match tied at 4-4 with No. 6 singles remaining, Brandon Helfrich (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) scored a three set win as Wilkes clinched a 5-4 victory over visiting Elizabethtown College Sunday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex.

With the win Wilkes improves to 5-2 overall while Elizabethtown drops to 3-4 on the year.

Elizabethtown finished doubles play with a 2-1 lead taking victories at No. 1 and 2 pairs. Wilkes No. 3 doubles duo of Evan Katz (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) and Brendon Blachowski (Newtown, PA /Council Rock North) captured a 9-8 (5) win for the Colonels.

In singles play, Elizabethtown pushed its advantage to 4-1 taking No. 4 and 1 singles flights. The Colonels responded winning the next four matches to seal the comeback win. Clarke Freeman (York, PA/Central York) started the rally with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Billy Freitig at No. 5. Zack Telljohann (Atlanta, GA/Westminster) followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 over Elizabethtown's Eric Fritzger. At No. 2 singles, Makos scored a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 victory to tie the match at 4-4 setting up Helfrich's deciding match at No. 6.

Wilkes returns to the courts Saturday for its Freedom Conference opener at Eastern University at 11:30 a.m.
