WILKES SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH FDU-FLORHAM IN FREEDOM DOUBLEHEADER

EDWARDSVILLE – Wilkes University used a pitching gem in a 3-2 game one win, but FDU-Florham responded in game two scoring 12 runs on 12 hits to record a 12-3 win in five innings in the nightcap Wednesday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex.

With the split Wilkes stands 5-13 overall and 2-6 in league play. FDU sees its overall mark move to 12-10 and 4-4 in Freedom contests.

Game one proved to be a pitching duel through four innings as the teams entered the fifth scoreless. FDU-Florham loaded the bases in the top of the fifth and grabbed a 1-0 when Brianne Faynor drew a walk.

The Lady Colonels responded in the bottom of the frame scoring three runs on four hits after just totaling one hit through the first four innings of play. Hughes and Kait Brown (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) singled to start the rally. Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) then doubled home both runners to give Wilkes a 2-1 lead. Bixler would score on the next play as Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) followed with a double off the centerfield fence extending the lead to 3-1.

FDU scored one run in the sixth to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Hughes retired the side in the seventh to seal the conference victory.

Hughes enjoyed her best outing of the season going all seven striking out 10 batters while allowing just five hits. Bixler led the offense going 2-for-3 with the two-run double.

Wilkes continued its hot bats in game two as Mandy Seccia (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and Hughes recorded RBI hits in the first inning. Seccia doubled and Hughes singled plating two runs for the Lady Colonels as Wilkes led 2-0 through two.

FDU came back with four runs in the third on four hits to take its first lead of the game 4-2. Wilkes cut into the lead in the fourth as Hughes added her second hit in the game, a single up the middle. Kait Brown (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) later singled home Hughes as Wilkes trailed 4-3 through four.

FDU then exploded for eight runs in the fifth including a three-run homer and three-run double to open up a 12-3 lead. Wilkes went in order in the bottom half of the frame to end the contest as FDU salvaged the split.

Bixler went all five innings suffering the loss in the circle allowing 12 runs (seven earned) while striking out three. Hughes and Katie Brown (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) posted two hits each to lead the offense.

Wilkes returns to play tomorrow with a road doubleheader at Susquehanna University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Selinsgrove, Pa.
