WILKES SOFTBALL TAKES TWO FROM BAPTIST BIBLE
 
EDWARDSVILLE – Wilkes University used timely hitting including long ball power  and some solid pitching to post a sweep of visiting Baptist Bible College Monday night at the Ralston Athletic Complex. The Lady Colonels took a 10-2 decision in five innings in game one before posting a 14-8 victory in the night cap.
 
Wilkes improves to 9-21 overall while Baptist Bible falls to 17-19 on the year.
 
Baptist Bible struck early in the first of game one as Kacee Rava singled home the Defenders first run to take a 1-0 lead. The Defenders added to their lead in the third scoring another run on two hits to up the lead to 2-0.
 
Wilkes responded in the bottom half of the third when Laykin Hughes (Minersville, PA/Pottsville) helped herself at the plate with a lead-off single to left field. Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) then connected on an RBI double to deep right-center to cut the deficit in half, 2-1. After Borger moved to third on a wild pitch, Mandy Seccia (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single to right field. Heather Compton (Easton, PA/Easton) gave Wilkes its first lead of the contest coming through with a two-out, two-run single to center field as the Lady Colonels led 4-2 through three innings of play.
 
Wilkes placed runners on first and second following a Hughes single and Borger base hit in the fourth. Emily McGrath (Upper Darby, PA/Drexel Hill) connected on an RBI double off the left field fence followed by a two-run double from Seccia to extend the advantage to 7-2.
 
In the fifth, Borger, Jess Paveletz and McGrath connected on RBI hits to increase the lead to 10-2 ending the game in five innings.
 
Hughes was stellar in the circle going all five innings allowing five hits and two runs while striking out 10 batters. Borger led the offense with three hits and two RBI's, while McGrath and Seccia finished with two hits and a combined five RBI's.
 
BBC began game two as it did game one leading 1-0 after its first at-bats. Wilkes answered in the bottom half of the frame tying the game at 1-1 as McGrath continued her hot bat with an RBI single to left field scoring Paveletz.
 
BBC took back the lead 4-2 after a two-run double and solo homer in the top of the third. Wilkes then exploded for five hits scoring five runs to take an 8-4 lead in the bottom half of the frame. Seccia, Paveletz, and Katie Brown (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) each contributed RBI hits in the inning.
 
Baptist Bible tied the game at 8-8 in the fifth using five hits to plate four runs including two Wilkes fielding miscues to prolong the inning. Borger gave Wilkes the lead back in the bottom of the inning belting a three-run homer to right-center and Dayna Finch (Milford, CT/Joseph Foran) singled home Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) to put Wilkes up 12-8 though five.
 
The Lady Colonels added two more runs in the sixth as Katie Brown (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) produced an RBI groundout and Paveletz went long with a solo home run to center field extending the lead to 14-8.
 
Eight different Lady Colonels reached the scoring column in game two including a 4-for-5 performance from Paveletz including four RBI's. Bixler and Seccia each added two hits.
 
Compton picked up the win in the circle going the distance allowing 11 hits while striking out three.
 
Wilkes returns to the diamond Wednesday with a home non-conference twinbill against the University of Scranton at 6:00 p.m. at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
