Steve Finkernagel laykin Hughes hit two homeruns in game one at Misericordia Thursday LATE INNING COLLAPSE DOOMS WILKES SOFTBALL AT MISERICORDIA 4/5/2012 7:18:00 PM Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LATE INNING COLLAPSE DOOMS WILKES SOFTBALL AT MISERICORDIA DALLAS, PA – The Wilkes University softball team held a big lead late in game one only to fall 8-7 in eight innings then dropped a 14-5 decision in five innings in game two at Misericordia University Thursday afternoon. Wilkes falls to 4-12 overall and 1-5 in Freedom play. Misericordia improves to 17-9 overall and 6-2 in league games. In game one, Misericordia jumped out to a 3-1 lead as Wilkes Laykin Hughes (Minersville, PA/Pottsville) provided the lone Lady Colonel run through three innings with a towering homerun to left field. Jessalyn Paveletz (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) continued the long ball for Wilkes connecting on a two-run homer in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3. Hughes then added her second homer of the contest, a three-run bomb to left field scoring Emily McGrath (Upper Darby, PA/Drexel Hill) and Mandy Seccia (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) as Wilkes led 6-3 after fourth innings. Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) hit Wilkes' fourth home run of the game to straight away center field pushing the Lady Colonels advantage to 7-3 in the top of the seventh. From there, Misericordia used a pair of two-run singles to tie the game at seven forcing extra innings. The Cougars added the game-winner in the eighth on an RBI double to complete the late rally. Hughes was excellent at the plate finishing 2-for-4 with four RBI's as well as the in the circle going 7.1 innings allowing eight runs on 11 hits. Seccia, Paveletz, and Borger added two hits each. In game two Wilkes scored four runs in the first thanks to three unearned runs and an RBI double from McGrath. Miseriordia responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame and continued to use hot bats throughout scoring nine more times in the following four frames to post the 14-5 win in five innings. Paveletz and McGrath led the offense in game two with two hits each. Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) suffered the loss in the circle going 4.1 innings allowing 14 hits and 14 runs while striking out four. Wilkes will remain idle through Easter break returning home Wednesday with a Freedom doubleheader against FDU-Florham. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
