COLONEL TENNIS SEASON ENDS IN FIRST ROUND OF NCAA REGIONALS

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Stevens Institute of Technology collected three doubles wins and scored two victories of three finished singles flights to post a 5-1 win over Wilkes University Friday morning at Chaffee Courts on the campus of Williams College in the first round of the NCAA Regionals.

Wilkes sees its season end with a 14-4 mark after capturing its fifth consecutive Freedom title and NCAA berth.

The Ducks posted three wins in doubles play as the No. 1 duo of Chris Rosensteel and Shota Tasaki were 8-2 winners over Wilkes' Steven Wilson (Bronx, NY/JFK) and Clarke Freeman (York, PA/Central York). At No. 2 Alex Makos (Mansfield, PA/Mansfield) and Zack Telljohann (Atlanta, GA/Westminster) held a 6-2 lead early but the pair of Andrew Riggs and Nicholas Rosasco stormed back to take the match 8-6 to put the Ducks ahead 2-0. Wilkes No. 3 pair of Brendon Blachowski (Newtown, PA /Council Rock North) and Brandon Helfrich (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) suffered an 8-5 defeat against Derek Smith and Daniel Szwarc to conclude doubles flights with Stevens leading the match 3-0.

Riggs then posted a singles victory at No. 2 over Wilson 6-2, 6-1 as the Ducks led 4-0. Wilkes recorded its first point at No. 6 singles as Helfrich scored a straight set 6-1, 6-4 win over Szwarc. Tasaki clinched the match for Stevens with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Telljohann at No. 3.

Wilkes returns all but one starter from this year's squad for 2012-13 looking for its sixth straight league crown and NCAA appearance.
