EDWARDSVILLE – Freshman Samantha Hockley (Middletown, PA/Lower Dauphin) scored three goals, including the game-winner midway through the second half, as Wilkes University posted a 5-4 thrilling Freedom Conference victory over FDU-Florham Saturday afternoon.

Wilkes moves to 7-4-2 overall and remains unbeaten at 2-0 in league games following the win. FDU-Florham falls to 6-8 on the year, 0-2 in league matches.

Wilkes opened with a quick 2-0 lead using goals from Hockley and Megan Binder (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon ) to gain the edge early. Hockley scored on a breakaway and Binder found the back of the net on a free kick from 40 yards out.

After FDU-Florham cut the advantage in half at 2-1, Sarah Wasley (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) cashed in on a cross from Katie Hughes (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) at 36:17 to up the lead back to two goals. Hockey finished off her hat trick in quick fashion early in the second half scoring off an assist from Dianna Connor (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) at 50:45 then notching her third tally at 51:04 as Wilkes led 5-1 midway through the frame.

The Devils responded with some aggressive play offensively posting three goals in the final 14 minutes of play to make it close. Claire Donohue scored twice and Samantha Messina added a goal with just under four minutes to play in the contest.

Wilkes held onto the lead as goalie Kate Mahoney (Kingston, NH/Central Catholic) remained strong in net to preserve the league win.

Wilkes held a 16-12 shot advantage while FDU-Florham garnered four corner kicks to Wilkes' three attempts.

Mahoney finished with five saves in net to record the win.

Wilkes returns to the pitch Tuesday when the Lady Colonels travel to Doylestown, Pa. for a matchup with Delaware Valley College at 4:00 p.m.
