WILKES VOLLEYBALL SURVIVES FIVE SET THRILLER 3-2 AGAINST MISERICORDIA

WILKES-BARRE – Casey Bohan (Harding/Wyoming Area) and Kelsey Yacko (Shamokin, PA/Shamokin) combined for 32 kills and six total blocks as Wilkes University held on for a 3-2 win over visiting Misericordia University in both teams' Freedom Conference finale Wednesday night.

Wilkes improves to 18-10 overall and finishes Freedom play at 6-1, its only loss coming to first place Eastern University. Misericordia falls to 12-17 on the year and closes out league play 3-4.

Wilkes jumped out to a 2-0 leading taking the first two sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-20. Misericordia responded claiming wins in sets three and four 25-20 and 25-22.

The teams traded points to start the fifth set before the Cougars opened up a 14-12 lead after two straight Meghan Stack kills. Two attack errors brought the Lady Colonels back tying the game at 14-14. Bohan then notched her 16th kill giving Wilkes a 15-14 lead and forcing a Misericordia timeout. Wilkes then found Bohan at the middle of the net for the match-clinching kill that deflected off a Cougar for the match point.

Bohan finished with 17 kills and two solo blocks, while Yacko added 15 kills on thirty attempts. Marissa Mallory (Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) led the Wilkes backline with a match-high 27 digs and Megan Powers (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) contributed in the passing game with 51 assists on 57 total kills.

Wilkes concludes its regular season slate Saturday when the Lady Colonels travel to Grantham, Pa. to compete in a tri-match at Messiah College. Wilkes faces Lancaster Bible at 12:30 p.m. before playing the host Messiah at 2:00 p.m.
