WILKES SOFTBALL OPENS SEASON WITH SPLIT ON DAY ONE OF VIRGINIA BEACH BLAST

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Wilkes University softball team opened its 2013 slate with a split at the Virginia Beach Blast Friday night. The Lady Colonels fell to Rowan 7-3 before posting a 7-4 win against Shenandoah University in the nightcap.

Wilkes moves to 1-1 following the days games.

In game one against Rowan, Michelle Coyle (West Milford, PA/West Milford) led the offense going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Coyle doubled to right center in the third scoring pinch runner Dayna Finch (Milford, CT/Joseph Foran) to tie the game at 1-1. After Rowan scored three runs in the third, Jessalyn Paveletz (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) homered to left field to cut the Rowan advantage to 4-2 in the bottom half of the frame.

Another Coyle RBI hit scored Laykin Hughes (Minersville, PA/Pottsville) who walked to start the fifth inning for Wilkes cutting the lead to 4-3. Rowan answered with three more runs in the fifth to secure the 7-3 victory.

Hughes went 4.2 innings in the circle allowing seven hits and seven runs striking out three in the loss.

Shenandoah grabbed a 1-0 lead after its first at-bats before Wilkes responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) reached on a fielder's choice in the second scoring Paveletz to keep the Lady Colonels ahead 3-2 after three.

Two RBI hits in the fifth gave Wilkes some breathing room as Mandy Seccia (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and Hayley Phillips each added run-scoring singles. Brooke Chapin (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) entered the game in the sixth pitching two scoreless innings in relief of starter Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) to record her first collegiate save. Bixler went five innings allowing four runs on five hits (1 unearned run).
