SOFTBALL DROPS TWO AT DESALES TO OPEN FREEDOM PLAY SATURDAY

CENTER VALLEY, PA – The Wilkes University softball team dropped a pair of games at DeSales University to open Freedom Conference play Saturday afternoon. The Lady Colonels fell 7-6 in game one before dropping a 6-4 decision in the second half of the twin bill.

Wilkes falls to 5-7 overall and 0-2 in league games. DeSales improves to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in conference contests.

DeSales opened with a 4-0 lead in game one through three innings scoring two runs each in the second and third. Wilkes answered with three runs in the top half of the fourth as Alex Hoops (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) drilled a three-run home run to left field, her first as a Lady Colonel, to cut the DeSales advantage to 4-3. Mandy Seccia (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) singled and Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) added a base hit scoring on the Hoops long ball.

The Lady Colonels made the comeback complete in the fifth loading the bases with one out in the frame. Hoops was hit by a pitch that forced home Kait Brown (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) who singled earlier in the inning.

Wilkes took its first lead of the game in the sixth when Seccia connected on a two-out, two-run double scoring Michelle Coyle (West Milford, PA/West Milford) and Brown giving the Lady Colonels a 6-4 lead. The lead was short-lived as the Bulldogs tied the game at 6-6 using two RBI hits including a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. After a scoreless top of the seventh, DeSales claimed the win in its last at-bats using an RBI hit with the bases loaded to score the game-winning run.

Brown led the Wilkes offense with two hits and two runs scored. Brooke Chapin (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) suffered the loss in the circle going 6.1 innings allowing seven runs on 16 hits while striking out one.

Game two saw the Lady Colonels jump out to an early lead scoring one run in the first. Hoops delivered the RBI hit in the frame singling home Jessalyn Paveletz (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) who walked earlier in the inning. After DeSales tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first, Wilkes responded with another run in the third as Borger tripled home Paveletz.

DeSales added two runs in the bottom of the third using three hits to score both runs. The Lady Colonels would not go away though taking the lead back 4-3 in the fifth as Borger cashed in on her second RBI of the game doubling to left centerfield. Hoops added an RBI groundout to complete the two-run frame for Wilkes.

Much like game one, DeSales used some late inning magic to earned the victory scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth including the game-winning tally on an RBI single with two outs.

Borger finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Hoops added one hit and two RBI. Laykin Hughes (Minersville, PA/Pottsville) went five innings allowing six runs on nine hits suffering the loss. Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) pitched a scoreless inning in the sixth in relief of Hughes.

Wilkes returns to the field Thursday when the Lady Colonels make their much anticipated home debut against Keystone College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in the Ralston Athletic Complex.
