WILKES SOFTBALL FALLS TWICE AT LEBANON VALLEY TUESDAY

ANNVILLE, PA – Host Lebanon Valley opened a big lead in game one and held on late 7-4 then stormed back in late innings in game two to post a 4-3 win and sweep of visiting Wilkes University Tuesday afternoon in non-conference softball action.

Wilkes slips to 5-9 overall following the twin bill while Lebanon Valley improves to 11-3 on the year.

Lebanon Valley grabbed a 4-0 lead after two innings of play thanks to a four-run, five hit frame in its second at-bats.  The hosts added three more runs in the fourth to extend the advantage to 7-0 through five innings of play.

The Wilkes offense finally got on track in the sixth as the Lady Colonels scored all four of their runs in the inning. Jessalyn Paveletz (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) began the inning with a single to right field and Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) walked to put runners on first and second for Alex Hoops (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood). Hoops cut into the lead with one swing belting a three-run home run to right centerfield as Wilkes trailed 7-3.

Emily McGrath (Upper Darby, PA/Drexel Hill) continued the Lady Colonel rally doubling to right field. Dayna Finch (Milford, CT/Joseph Foran) followed with a single through the left side moving McGrath to third. After a strikeout and pop out, Michelle Coyle (West Milford, PA/West Milford) scored McGrath on an RBI single to bring Wilkes to within three 7-4 with one last at-bat.

Two strikeouts and a pop out to shortstop ended the Wilkes rally in the seventh as LVC secured the non-league victory.

Hoops led the offense going 3-for-4 with three RBI including her second home run of the season. McGrath added two hits while pitching six innings allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits striking out two.

Sam Derr picked up the win for LVC going all seven innings allowing four runs on nine hits striking out eight.

Wilkes took a quick 2-0 lead to start game two when Laykin Hughes (Minersville, PA/Pottsville) helped herself at the plate connecting on an RBI double scoring Borger. A Lebanon Valley wild pitch plated the Lady Colonels second run of the inning. The Wilkes lead grew to 3-0 in the third when Borger singled home Mandy Seccia (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) who started the inning with a base hit.

LVC cut the deficit to 3-1 in the third before tying the game in the sixth after scoring one run in the fifth. Following a scoreless top of the seventh for Wilkes, LVC used three hits to plate the game-winning run with two outs in its final at-bats.

Seccia led the offense going 2-for-3 with one run scored. Borger, Hughes, and McGrath accounted for the other five Wilkes hits in the contest.

Brooke Chapin (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) received the loss in the circle for Wilkes after entering the game in relief of Hughes. Chapin pitched 2.2 innings allowing three runs on eight hits. Hughes went four innings allowing just one run while striking out four batters.

Wilkes will make its much anticipated home debut Thursday when the Lady Colonels host Keystone College in a non-conference doubleheader scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
