WILKES SOFTBALL GOES 2-0 TO START SEA GULL CLASSIC

SALISBURY, MD – The Wilkes University softball team opened play at the Salisbury University Sea Gull Classic with a pair of wins Friday. The Lady Colonels opened with a 7-6 victory over Hunter College, then posted a 13-0 win in five innings over Baruch College in the nightcap.

Wilkes improves to 5-3 overall on the season following the pair of wins.

Against Hunter, Wilkes opened scoring one run in the first when Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) singled home Mandy Seccia (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott). After Hunter tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the frame, the Lady Colonels responded with three runs in the second all off the bat of Michelle Coyle (West Milford, PA/West Milford) as the freshman belted her first career home run in the Navy and Gold.

Hunter added one run in the third and four more unanswered runs in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead into the sixth. From there, Katie Brown (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) hit her first home run of the season to dead centerfield in the sixth and Wilkes regained the lead in the seventh when two fielder's choice RBI hits from Jessayln Paveletz and Borger put the Lady Colonels ahead 7-6.

Brooke Chapin (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) entered in relief of Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) in the sixth and pitched two scoreless, hitless innings to record the win in the circle.

In game two against Baruch, Wilkes exploded for eight runs in the first and added five more in the second to cruise by the Bearcats in five innings. Alex Hoops (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood), Bixler, and Kait Brown (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) each added two hits and combined for six RBI's.

Laykin Hughes (Minersville, PA/Pottsville) pitched a gem in her first win of the year going four innings allowing just two hits while striking out five batters.
