WILKES SOFTBALL SUFFERS TWO LOSSES TO CONCLUDE PLAY AT SEA GULL CLASSIC

SALISBURY, MD – The Wilkes University softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday to conclude play at the Salisbury University Sea Gull Classic. Wilkes fell 2-0 in a tight contest against Allegheny College, then lost in eight innings to Randolph-Macon College 4-3.

Wilkes ends its spring break trip with a 5-5 overall mark.

Allegheny scored the game's lone two runs in the sixth as Brooke Chapin (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) and Caitlin Nealer pitched flawlessly throughout. Two straight singles to leadoff the inning began the rally. A Wilkes miscue in the infield led to both runners scoring giving the Gators the victory.

Chapin was solid going all seven innings allowing seven hits while striking out three. Nealer was equally impressive going all seven allowing just two Wilkes hits while striking out 11 batters.

In game two against Randolph-Macon, the Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead after one inning using a sacrifice fly to score the run. Wilkes responded in the second when Dayna Finch (Milford, CT/Joseph Foran) reached on an error scoring Alex Hoops (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) from third base. After RMC took a 2-1 lead into the sixth, Jessalyn Paveletz (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) belted her second home run of the season, a solo shot to straight-away centerfield tying the game at 2-2.

The game would enter the eighth inning where international rules were engaged as each team began the inning with a runner on second base. Mandy Seccia (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) gave the Lady Colonels a 3-2 lead in the top of the frame when she singled up the middle scoring Vickie Warne (Philadelphia, PA/Milton Hershey).

The lead was short-lived as Katy Wood ended the game with one swing of the bat hitting a two-run homerun to centerfield to give RMC the victory.

Laykin Hughes (Minersville, PA/Pottsville) recorded the loss in the circle going seven innings allowing eight hits and four runs (three earned) striking out one. Paveletz led the offense finishing 3-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

Wilkes returns to action next Saturday when the Lady Colonels open up Freedom Conference play at cross-town rival King's College at Betzler Field at 1:00 p.m.
