LATE RALLIES UPEND WILKES SOFTBALL AT FDU-FLORHAM
 
MADISON, NJ – The Wilkes University softball team began a two-day stretch of four Freedom Conference games dropping a pair of one-run contests at FDU-Florham Sunday afternoon. Wilkes fell 8-7 in game one before losing a thrilling 7-6 contest in eight innings in game two.
 
Wilkes falls to 9-17 overall and 2-6 in league play, while FDU-Florham improves to 15-13 overall and 8-4 in Freedom games.
 
FDU-Florham stormed out to a 4-0 lead through two innings in game one before Wilkes responded with one run in the top of the third. Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) doubled scoring Michelle Coyle (West Milford, PA/West Milford) to plate the Lady Colonels first run of the contest.
 
After a scoreless bottom half of the third, the Lady Colonels scored three runs in the fourth using a Mandy Seccia (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) RBI single and FDU-Florham miscue in the field to plate two more runs. FDU-Florham answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth using two hits including a two-run double to keep a 7-4 advantage.
 
Wilkes tied the game in the sixth accounting for three runs in the inning all coming off the bat of Bixler who connected on a three-run home run to left field. The Devils scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth as a Wilkes error in the field led to the deciding run.
 
Laykin Hughes (Minersville, PA/Pottsville) suffered the loss in the circle going all six innings allowing eight runs (five earned) on seven hits striking out three. Bixler led the offense with two hits and four RBI.
 
Wilkes used the long ball in game two to take an early lead as Bixler came through at the plate again this time drilling a grand slam home run to centerfield to give the Lady Colonels a 4-0 lead after one.
 
FDU-Florham cut the Wilkes advantage to 5-4 in the sixth using two solo home runs and an RBI single to do its damage. Jessalyn Paveletz (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) added a long home run of her own in the seventh adding to the Wilkes lead, 6-4, heading into the bottom of the frame. An RBI single in the FDU-Florham seventh tied the game at 7-7. After a scoreless top of the eighth, the hosts used an RBI double to seal the conference win.
 
Four different Lady Colonels posted two hits in the loss. Brooke Chapin (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) received the loss going all seven and two-thirds allowing 13 hits and seven runs (five earned).
 
Wilkes has a quick turnaround traveling to St. Davids, Pa. Monday for a makeup doubleheader at Eastern University beginning at 3:00 p.m.
