EDWARDSVILLE – Laykin Hughes (Minersville, PA/Pottsville) threw a one hitter in game one and the Lady Colonel offense erupted for 13 hits in game two as the Wilkes University softball team swept Delaware Valley College Saturday in Freedom Conference action.

With the wins, Wilkes improves to 13-19 overall and 4-8 in league play while the Aggies move to 8-20 overall and 0-12 in the league.

In game one, Hughes was dominant. Aside from allowing a first inning RBI single to Krystal Mazza, the Aggies could not figure her out or hit the ball solid. After the Aggies scored a single tally in the first, the Lady Colonel bats responded with a three spot in the bottom of the frame. Mandy Seccia (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and Jessalyn Paveletz (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) singled to start the attack. Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) came up big with two run single as she came around to score on an outfield miscue.

In the bottom of the third, Wilkes struck again for three runs. Seccia singled and moved to third on an Alex Hoops (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) double. Both runners came around to score on a Bixler double to left center. Bixler was later plated on an Emily McGrath (Upper Darby, PA/Drexel Hill) RBI single.

The Lady Colonels added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Michelle Coyle (West Milford, PA/West Milford) and Seccia singled. A Hoops RBI single scored Coyle and made it a 7-1 game.

Hughes allowed five free passes, and one hit, but struck out 11 in her seven stellar innings of work. Seccia, Bixler, and Hoops each laced three hits while Bixler accounted for five RBI's.

In game two, the Lady Colonels struck for three runs in the bottom of the first once again. Haylie Phillips (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford) singled and was followed by singles from McGrath, Paveletz, and Coyle.

The Lady Colonels struck for four runs in the second frame. Kait Brown (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) singled and moved to third on a Seccia single. After Hoops reached on an error, Wilkes took advantage, and Bixler delivered the big hit of the inning with a three run bomb over the center field fence.

Wilkes enforced the eight run rule In the fifth, when they got their final run on a Paveletz single, scoring Coyle who doubled earlier in the inning.

Brooke Chapin (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) was phenomenal on the mound, allowing three hits while striking out three in her five innings of work. McGrath led the Lady Colonel offense with three hits.

Wilkes returns to action when they travel to Scranton for a doubleheader on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
