WILKES SOFTBALL DOUBLES UP SCRANTON, 13-4, 7-6

SCRANTON – The Wilkes University softball team swept a doubleheader at Scranton, winning game one 13-4 before winning 7-6 in ten innings in the night cap in non-conference action Tuesday night.

Wilkes improves to 15-19 while Scranton falls to 11-14.

In game one, the Lady Colonels capitalized all 13 runs in two big innings. In the third, Wilkes scored four runs on three hits. Michelle Coyle (West Milford, PA/West Milford) and Mandy Seccia (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) singled to start the inning. After an Alex Hoops (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) walk, Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) hit a sacrifice fly to plate Coyle before Laykin Hughes (Minersville, PA/Pottsville) delivered the big blow of the inning with a three run blast over the center field fence.

In the top of the sixth, the Lady Colonels woke up the bats for nine runs on six hits. Coyle doubled, Seccia walked, and Jessalyn Paveletz (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) singled to load the bases. A Hoops single plated Coyle while a free pass to Bixler brought home Seccia. Haylie Phillips (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford) and Dayna Finch (Milford, CT/Joseph Foran) singled to bring home two runs while Seccia capped the inning with a three run home run to left field.

Hughes earned the win on the mound, pitching all six innings and striking out nine while scattering eight hits and four runs, one of which was earned.

In game two, Wilkes struck for four runs in the top of the first. The Lady Colonels loaded the bases on singles from Coyle and Seccia and a walk by Paveletz. Bixler brought in a run when she was hit by a pitch and Hughes and Finch each laced RBI singles. Brooke Chapin (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) then garnered an RBI on a fielder's choice.

Scranton got two runs back in the second on two RBI singles. In the third, the Royals plated two more runners capitalizing on two Lady Colonel errors. The two squads traded runs in the fifth and sixth respectively. Wilkes got their run on a Coyle double scoring Chapin who singled earlier in the inning.

Tied at five, the two teams traded zeroes until the tenth inning. Bixler, who started on second base to start the inning, stole third and then scored on a Phillips groundout to first base. With one out, Finch singled to left field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chapin. Kait Brown (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) then doubled to score Finch. The Royals garnered a run in the bottom of the tenth, but Chapin stranded a Royal base runner on third base to secure the 7-6 victory.

Chapin earned her fifth win of the year, scattering 13 hits and six strikeouts in ten innings of work.

The Lady Colonels return to action Saturday when they host Misericordia for a Freedom Conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
