Wilkes concludes its season Wednesday at Misericordia University WILKES SOFTBALL SWEPT BY MARYWOOD SUNDAY 4/28/2013 4:44:00 PM Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WILKES SOFTBALL SWEPT BY MARYWOOD SUNDAY EDWARDSVILLE – Visiting Marywood University opened with a 9-8 win in game one before posting a 4-0 shutout victory in game two to sweep the Wilkes University softball team Sunday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex. Wilkes falls to 16-22 overall while Marywood improves to 18-14 on the year. Wilkes scored three runs in the bottom of the first of game one thanks to a two-run home run from Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley). Marywood answered with two runs in the top of the second using two RBI hits to cut the lead to 3-2. Kait Brown (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) led-off the second for Wilkes with a base hit to centerfield. Brown later scored on an RBI double from Michelle Coyle (West Milford, PA/West Milford) to up the Wilkes advantage to 4-2. The Pacers responded and tied the game at 4-4 in the third connecting on back-to-back RBI hits in the frame. Marywood took its first lead of the game in the fifth scoring four runs on four hits to take an 8-4 lead. Jessalyn Paveletz (Hanover Township, PA/Hanover Area) began the bottom of the fifth with a single to start a Wilkes rally. After Alex Hoops (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) reached on a fielder's choice and Bixler on an error, Emily McGrath (Upper Darby, PA/Drexel Hill) singled through the left side to load the bases. From there, Laykin Hughes (Minersville, PA/Pottsville) brought home one run with an infield single to cut the deficit to three, 8-5. Another RBI single from Brown followed by a two-run single from Coyle tied the game at 8-8. Marywood stole the game away from Wilkes in the top of the sixth when a lead-off walk eventually came home on a Wilkes throwing miscue and subsequent fly ball to right field. Bixler and Coyle led the Wilkes offense with two hits each combining for five RBI. Laykin Hughes (Minersville, PA/Pottsville) received the loss in the circle going three innings allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. Amanda Stine recorded the win for Marywood pitching all seven innings scattering ten Wilkes hits while allowing eight runs (two earned). Marywood opened game two scoring one run in the first then added two more tallies in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The lead grew to 4-0 after six as the visitors added an insurance run in the fourth. The Wilkes offense was held in check by Pacers pitcher Katie King who recorded the complete game win scattering four hits in the shutout. Haylie Phillips (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford) suffered her first loss of the season in the circle pitching all seven innings in the contest.
