Steve Finkernagel The Lady Colonels return home 3/23 in a non-conference game vs. New Paltz LADY COLONELS SOFTBALL DROPS TWO IN FREEDOM CONFERENCE OPENER AGAINST EASTERN 3/21/2014 9:03:00 PM Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LADY COLONELS SOFTBALL DROPS TWO IN FREEDOM CONFERENCE OPENER AGAINST EASTERN EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes Lady Colonels opened up both their home schedule and Freedom Conference play with a pair of losses as Eastern University won game one 12-0 (five innings) and game two 7-1. Wilkes fall to (0-6, 0-2 Freedom) on the season while Eastern improves to (7-4, 2-0 Freedom). In game one Eastern plated six runs in both the 2nd and 3rd innings and Freshman pitcher Alyssa Welsh pitched a no-hitter. Welsh struck out eight Lady Colonels and allowed just two walks. Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) picked up the loss for Wilkes as she allowed 12 runs (eight earned) in 2.1 innings. Bixler gave up homeruns to Karlee Kerchersky, Melinda Kreimer and Kelsey Clever. Freshman Ashley Eden (Fogelsville, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) stymied the Eagles offense in relief as she finished the game allowing just two hits in 2.2 innings of work. Eagles Kasey Williams finished a perfect 4-for-4 from the dish with three RBI's. In game two Eastern put a three spot up on the board in the top of the 3rd inning, while Wilkes responded with a run of their own on an Emily McGrath (Upper Darby, PA/Drexel Hill) RBI groundout to second base that scored Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley). After a scoreless 4th inning the Eagles tacked on two more runs on an Emily Houck two RBI single to left center. Eastern added another run in the top of the 6th to make the score 6-1 and Houck hit a homerun to center field in the top of the 7th to give the Eagles a 7-1 lead. Wilkes was led at the plate by Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley), Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) and Alex Hoops (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) who all had two hits apiece. Kristen Waters improved her record to 4-0 on the season for Eastern with a complete game. She allowed nine hits and just one run. Haylie Phillips (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford) picked up the loss for the Lady Colonels. Phillips allowed six runs (three earned) and eight hits over six innings. The Lady Colonels continue Freedom Conference play when they travel to Doylestown tomorrow to face the Delaware Valley Aggies. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. Print Friendly Version
