MANHATTANVILLE SWEEPS LADY COLONELS IN SOFTBALL
 
PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Wilkes University softball team traveled to Manhattanville College on Saturday afternoon losing both games by the scores of 13-2 and 13-6.

Wilkes now stands at 4-20 overall and 1-9 in Freedom play while Manhattanville improves to 15-7 overall and 9-1 in the conference.

In game one the Valiants put up an eight spot in the bottom of the 1st inning as they collected eight hits in the inning.  In the top of the 4th inning Wilkes scored two runs to close the lead to 9-2.  Mandy Seccia (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) had a two-RBI single to right center that score Lacey Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) and Emily McGrath (Upper Darby, PA/Drexel Hill).  In the bottom of the 4th Manhattanville scored four runs to stretch the lead to 13-2 and Wilkes was unable to score any runs in the top of the 5th as the game was called due to the eight run mercy rule.  Jenna Graziano (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne), Alex Hoops (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood), Mcgrath, Lacey Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) and Seccia all had hits for the Lady Colonels.  The Valiants pounded out 14 hits with five different batters having multi-hit efforts in the game. 
 
In game two Wilkes jumped to a 5-0 lead after the top of the 2nd inning.  In the top of the 1st inning, Ally Paskas (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) hit a a two-RBI single through the right side that scored Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) and Makenna Rushannon (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville).  Seccia reached on an error that allowed Hoops to score the Lady Colonels third run of the inning.  Hoops doubled down the leftfield line in the top of the second that plated two and gave Wilkes a 5-0 advantage. 
 
The Valiants clawed back in the 2nd and 3rd innings scoring three runs.  Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) hit a sac fly for Wilkes in the top of the 4th to get a run back and put them up 6-3 however in the bottom of the 4th the Valiants scored six runs putting them up 9-6.  Wilkes starting pitcher Haylie Phillips (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford) was unable to get anyone out in the fourth and picked up the loss as she allowed eight runs on eight hits and five walks.  Kirsten Savage hit a three run home run in the bottom of the 5th and the Valiants scored another run in the bottom of the 6th to extend their lead to 13-6.
 
Rushannon and Hoops each had two hits for the Lady Colonels in game two.  Rushannon scored two runs while Hoops scored a run and had two-RBI's.  The Valiants as a team continued to hit the ball well pounding out 17 hits.  Five Valiants had multi-hit games with Shelbee Damianos going 5-for-5 with two-RBI's and a run scored.  Alyssa Taylor picked up both wins for Manhattanville on the day throwing 12 innings allowing just four earned runs on 13 hits striking out six for the doubleheader.
 
Wilkes returns to action tomorrow when they face Freedom Conference foe FDU-Florham at the Ralston Athletic Complex.  The Lady Colonels will honor their seniors prior to the 1 o' clock first pitch.
