WILKES SOFTBALL SPLITS FREEDOM TWINBILL WITH FDU-FLORHAM

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University softball team earned a split with visiting FDU-Florham Sunday afternoon in a Freedom Conference doubleheader at the Ralston Athletic Complex. Wilkes fell 11-3 in five innings in game one before posting a 14-6 win in six innings in game two.

Wilkes moves to 5-21 overall and 2-10 in Freedom games following the split.

FDU-Florham scored five runs in the first inning of game one before Wilkes responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) singled through the right side scoring Makenna Rushannon (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) and Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) on the play. Lacey Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) then reached on an error scoring Borger later in the inning.

From there it was all FDU-Florham as the Devils scored one run in the second, two in the fourth and ended the game in the fifth scoring three more runs to reach the eight-run rule. Nikki Caruso capped off the scoring with a three-run homer to right center field in the fifth.

Borger led the way offensively in game one finishing 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Bixler suffered the loss in the circle going four innings allowing eight runs on eight hits striking out one.

Game two saw Wilkes explode offensively collecting a season-high 21 hits in the 14-run effort. The Lady Colonels wasted little time crossing the plate as Alex Hoops (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) doubled down the left field line in the first scoring Borger.

After FDU-Florham tied the game at 1-1 after the top of the second, Wilkes responded taking back the lead scoring two runs in the bottom of the frame. Ally Paskas (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) drilled an RBI double up the middle and Mandy Seccia (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) followed with an RBI double of her own to left centerfield.

FDU-Florham took its first lead of the game in the top of the third scoring three runs on two hits. The Lady Colonels answered again this time scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the advantage back at 5-4. Brooke Limeberry (Easton, PA/Easton) connected on an RBI double and Haylie Phillips (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford) added another RBI double to leftfield to give Wilkes the lead.

FDU-Florham tied the game for a second time in the top of the fourth to setup the big fifth inning for Wilkes. Wilkes scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth with three of the tallies coming off the bat of A. Bixler who drilled a three-run shot to left field, her fifth bomb of the season, giving Wilkes a 11-6 lead.

Wilkes added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth with the game-clincher coming when A. Bixler singled home Casara McCleaf (Fairfield, PA/Delone Catholic).

Meghan Kisela (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Blue Mountain) went all six innings to pick-up the win in the circle allowing six runs on nine hits.

Six different Lady Colonels posted two or more hits including a 4-for-4 performance from Borger (three runs scored). For the two-game set, Borger went a perfect 7-for-7 from the plate.

Wilkes returns to the field Thursday traveling to Keystone College for a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
