Steve Finkernagel Alysha Bixler pitched well in the game one loss against King's striking out five in seven innings KING’S SLIPS PAST WILKES SOFTBALL TWICE IN FREEDOM ACTION 4/5/2014 6:24:00 PM Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 KING'S SLIPS PAST WILKES SOFTBALL TWICE IN FREEDOM ACTION EDWARDSVILLE – Jumping out to leads early in both contests, the Wilkes University softball team could not hold on losing a pair of games against cross-town rival King's College Saturday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex. Wilkes drops to 2-16 overall and 1-7 in Freedom games. King's improves to 15-7 on the year, 4-4 in league play. Wilkes took an early 2-0 lead in game one thanks to Alex Hoops (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood)' two-run single down the right field line. Lacey Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) and Jordan Borger (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) both scored on the play. King's responded with a run in the second when Nicolette Pizzo reached on an error scoring Maggie Gola on the play. The visiting Lady Monarchs opened the game up in the fourth scoring four runs using a key three-run double from Shelby Eby in the frame to take a 5-2 lead. King's added two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh on way to the five-run comeback victory. Wilkes managed five hits in game one as Karissa Kross earned the win in the circle for King's going all seven innings striking out five. Alysha Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) recorded the loss for Wilkes going all seven allowing just four hits while striking out five. Six costly Wilkes mistakes in the field led to three unearned runs in the contest. Hoops began game two where she left off in game one slamming an RBI double to left centerfield in the second giving Wilkes a 1-0 lead. King's responded yet again in the top of the third with runners on the corners and one out when Jen Harnischfeger tried to steal second but the throw from Borger caught her stealing allowing the runner on third to cross the plate. King's took its first lead of the game in the fifth as Harnischfeger crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Amanda Cardone delivered an RBI single through the left side. Ally Paskas (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) made things interesting in the bottom of the sixth belting her second home run of the season to center field cutting the King's lead to 3-2. After a scoreless top of the seventh, Wilkes put one runner on and the game-winning tally at the plate but could not provide the key hit to tie the game. Brittany Haight threw the complete game win for King's allowing five hits and two earned runs. Haylie Phillips (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford) suffered the loss in the circle for Wilkes in game two going four and a third allowing three runs while striking out two. Wilkes returns to play Sunday hosting John Jay College at 2:00 p.m. at the Ralston Athletic Complex.Print Friendly Version
