No. 11 Wilkes Wrestling Falls 18-12 at No. 9 Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – In a battle of top-15 teams, No. 9 Ithaca College held on for an 18-12 victory over No. 11 Wilkes University Friday night at Glazer Arena.

Wilkes falls to 14-5 overall following the defeat while Ithaca improves to 10-2 on the year after the win.

After Ithaca took a 3-0 lead after the 197-pound bout, Dave Oberrender (Freeland, PA/Hazleton) took an 8-4 decision at 285 to tie the match at 3-3. No. 9 Guesseppe Rea (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) gave Wilkes its first lead of the night beating No. 10 James Kaishian 8-5 in a bout between two ranked wrestlers at 125.

Matthew Grossmann (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) scored the biggest win of the match when he bested No. 3 and three-time All-American Alex Gomez 5-1 at 133 as Wilkes led 9-3 after four bouts.

Ithaca picked up decision wins at 141, 149, 157, and 165 to take back the advantage 15-9. Kyle Diesel (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley) added a 4-2 decision victory over Nikolas Hansen at 174 before another Ithaca decision at 184 capped off the win for the host Bombers.

Wilkes returns to the mat Thursday traveling to cross-town rival King's College for its dual match season finale at 7:00 p.m.
