Wilkes Baseball Opens With Two Wins Against Paine Saturday
 
AUGUSTA, GA – The Wilkes University baseball team opened its 2015 campaign with a pair of wins beating host Paine College 8-4 and 5-3 in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Lions Field.
 
In game one, Dan Pisanchyn (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) put Wilkes up early in the top of the second hitting an RBI single scoring Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) who walked to start the inning.
 
After Paine tied the game in the bottom of the third on a fielder's choice, the Colonel bats exploded for seven runs in the top of the fourth. Ryan Herbst (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) highlighted the scoring with a two-run triple while Nick Preston (Duryea, PA/Scranton Prep) and Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro) added RBI singles in the frame.
 
Wilkes surrendered three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh closed out the four-run victory.
 
Quinn Kelly (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley), Chris Nixon (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) and Jeff Roedell (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) combined to throw a three-hitter for the Colonels. Nixon picked up the win going 1.2 innings allowing one hits and two earned runs. Kelly struck out a game-high five batters  in three innings of work.
 
Wilkes jumped out to an early lead in game two taking a 2-0 lead after one inning. After Bobby Schappell (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) tripled, Reese grounded out to shortstop scoring Schappell on the play. Ruch later homered in the inning to add Wilkes second run.
 
The Colonels then added three more insurance runs in the top of the sixth using two hits to do its damage. Reese contributed the big hit in the frame connecting on a two-run single scoring Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) and Roedell.
 
Ruch went four innings on the hill in game two striking out three. Thatcher David (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) entered in relief going one scoreless inning to record the victory.
 
Wilkes continues its spring break trip on Monday playing a single nine-inning game against Kenyon College at 1:30 p.m.
