Wilkes Baseball Falls Twice Against Elizabethtown

Wilkes Baseball Falls Twice Against Elizabethtown

FORT PIERCE, FL – The Wilkes University baseball team dropped a pair of one-run games (3-2) including an extra-inning defeat against Elizabethtown College Tuesday afternoon at the Bob Gladwin Complex.

Wilkes sees its overall mark drop to 2-3 following the pair of losses.

Game one saw Wilkes take a 2-0 lead in the fifth thanks to RBI singles from Jarrett Clymer and Bobby Schappell (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville). The Colonels kept their 2-0 lead into the top of the seventh before the Blue Jays answered with two runs on RBI groundouts to tie the game at 2-2 to force extra play.

Elizabethtown then won it in the eighth using an RBI groundout to first base to score the game-winning tally.

Clymer led the Wilkes bats going 2-for-4. Patrick Condo (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) started and went 5.2 strong innings not allowing a run on five hits while striking out five. Matt Kaster (Traben-Trabach, Germany/Crestwood) pitched the final 2.1 innings giving up three this and three runs on way to the loss.

Game two was much of the same as both teams kept things close throughout. After Elizabethtown took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Wilkes responded in the third when Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) singled home Schappell to tie the game at 1-1. Wilkes then took the lead in the top of the fifth when Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) doubled home Schappell as the Colonels led 2-1.

The lead was short-lived as Elizabethtown rallied for two runs in the bottom half of the fifth to take back the lead at 3-2. Two RBI singles did the damage in the frame. Wilkes was unable to knot the score up again over the final two innings of play.

Wilkes managed seven total hits in the game with Ruch's lone extra-base double. Chris Nixon (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) suffered the loss on the mound starting and going 5.1 innings allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out three. Jeff Roedell (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) entered in relief picking up the final two outs of the game.

Wilkes is back in action Thursday playing a doubleheader against Lebanon Valley College starting at 11:00 a.m.
