DAVIDS, PA – The Colonels frantic rally attempt came up just short as they fell to the Eagles 14-11, in a Freedom Conference game that was called after the top of the 8th due to darkness. The Colonels fall to 14-12 overall and sit at 8-5 in the Freedom, while Eastern improves to 9-14 overall and 6-7 in the Freedom conference. The Eagles jumped on Colonels starting pitcher Chris Nixon (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) early pounding out eight hits and scoring seven runs in 2.1 innings. Trailing 7-1 heading into the top of the 4th the Colonels plated six runners to knot the game at 6-6. Three errors helped the Colonels score runs with Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) and Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) providing RBI singles in the inning. Needing a shutdown inning after putting up a crooked number in the top of the 6th the Colonels relinquished the lead allowing Eastern to score six runs of their own to re-take command of the game at 13-7. Trailing 14-7 heading into the top of the 8th the Colonels chipped away with four runs to make it a 14-11 game. Clymer laced a RBI ground-rule double down the third base line, James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono) hit a RBI single up the middle and Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) singled through the middle for three of the runs. The Colonels had a chance to tack on more runs in what would be their final at-bat of the game but the Eagles were able to retire Ryan Herbst (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) and Champi ending the game stranding runners on first and second base. Ruch finished the game 3-for-5 launching his 7th homer of the season in the 2nd inning. Zak Berg (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood), Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro), and Clymer had two hits apiece. Tyler Piccotti (Taylor, PA/Riverside) took the loss on the mound allowing six earned runs in one inning pitched. Wilkes returns to action Friday when they travel to Madison, NJ for an important Freedom Conference nine-inning game against the Devils of FDU-Florham. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Print Friendly Version
