Wilkes slips to 16-16 overall and 10-9 in league play while DeSales improves to 20-12 overall and 14-2 in conference games. Wilkes took an early 1-0 lead after one inning when Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) came around to score after a leadoff single thanks to an RBI hit from Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer). A five-run second inning pushed the Colonels lead to 6-0. The inning started with a Zak Berg (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) single followed by a free pass to Bobby Schappell (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville). Clymer then attempted a bunt where the DeSales starter overthrew first scoring Berg on the play. From there, a two-run double off the bat of Dan Pisanchyn (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) and RBI single from Ruch capped the rally for Wilkes in the frame. Ruch's third hit of the game, an RBI double, plated the Colonels seventh run of the contest keeping the hosts up 7-1 after four innings. In the fifth, Ruch continued his hot bat at the plate connecting on another RBI double upping the lead to 8-1. A two-run single from Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) on Wilkes' next at-bat extended the advantage to 10-1 through five. Wilkes loaded the bases again in the sixth and Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro) came through with a two out, two-run single to right field followed by another RBI hit from Champi as the Colonels went back in front by nine at 13-4. DeSales rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh to inch closer at 13-10 using four hits including a two-run triple and double in the frame. The Bulldogs made the comeback complete in the eighth scoring five more times to take a 15-13 lead. Another two-run triple in the frame provided most of the damage. Wilkes answered with one run in the bottom half of the eighth when Reese scored on a strikeout that got away from the DeSales catcher making it 15-14 Bulldogsheading to the ninth. DeSales added an insurance run in the top of the ninth before closing out the game to secure the Freedom victory. Four Colonels finished with multi-hit games led by Ruch's 4-for-5 performance including two RBI's. Reese finished 4-for-4 with three RBI's while Champi posted three hits and three RBI's. Quinn Kelly (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley), the Wilkes starter, pitched six strong innings allowing four runs on five hits before the Bulldogs got to the Colonel bullpen in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Wilkes heads to DeSales tomorrow to complete the season series with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. in Center Valley, Pa.Print Friendly Version
